Community Fridge for The Food Sharing
Community fridges are a grassroots solution to food insecurity — publicly accessible refrigerators stocked with donated food that anyone can take from or contribute to, no questions asked.
Our Community Fridge program installs and maintains fridges across neighborhoods with high food insecurity. Volunteers and local businesses keep them stocked with fresh produce, cooked meals, and packaged foods.
The Community Fridge Model
The beauty of the community fridge is its radical simplicity. There are no forms to fill, no eligibility checks, and no stigma. Anyone who is hungry can take what they need, and anyone with surplus food can give. This peer-to-peer model builds community bonds while solving an immediate need.
- Fridges installed in high-visibility, accessible public locations
- Stocked daily by a rotating network of volunteers and partner businesses
- Regular cleaning and maintenance schedules ensure food safety standards
- Digital tracking system monitors stock levels in real time for quick refills
- Community notice boards at each fridge share local support resources
Growing the Network
What began with just 3 fridges in a single city has grown into a network of 47 fridges across 12 neighbourhoods. Last year alone, our community fridges redistributed over 180,000 meals worth of food that would otherwise have gone to waste. We have ambitious plans to expand to 100 fridges within the next two years.
